FAQ: Materials & Diamonds
Frequently asked questions about materials, diamonds, and textures in iJewel Playground.
How do I change the rotation of a brushed metal texture?
Go to Picking → Physical Material → Map Sampler and adjust the Rotation property. The Map Sampler settings are available for any texture map (albedo, roughness, metalness, normal, etc.). Note that your model needs proper UV coordinates for this to work — make sure the Triplanar extension is disabled.

How do I get a deeper/clearer engraving?
Use the Simple Text modifier along with Parallax Mapping:
- Go to Modifiers → Simple Text → Add Text and type your engraving. Make sure to click Apply
- Enable Modifiers → Parallax Mapping
- To control the depth, adjust bumpScale in Picking → Physical Material → Bump/Normal
My diamond looks white/plain instead of sparkly. What's wrong?
This is typically caused by a missing or inappropriate environment map for the diamond material. Try:
- Make sure an HDRI environment map is loaded in Scene → Background / Environment
- Check the Gem Env setting — if it's set to None, the diamond won't reflect anything. Select an appropriate diamond environment map
- Adjust the Bloom parameters in Post Processing — this adds the sparkle/glow effect
- Try adjusting envRotation values in the diamond material settings
Can I apply a different HDRI specifically for diamonds?
Yes. You can set separate environment map slots for Gem/Diamond materials. Additionally, you can create a custom HDR map specifically optimized for diamond sparkle.

Why do my diamonds have pixelated seams?
Pixelated seams on diamonds are usually related to normal map resolution. The diamond mesh may have low-resolution normals or overlapping/broken geometry. Check the following:
- Make sure your diamond mesh has clean, non-overlapping geometry
- Check that normals are correct — avoid modifiers like mirroring that can create overlapping meshes
- Use the diamond models provided by iJewel, which are optimized for the renderer
Unnatural black shadows appear inside my marquise-cut diamond. How do I fix this?
This is often caused by incorrect normals or broken/overlapping meshes in the diamond geometry. This can happen when you use modifiers like mirroring in 3D software. Try:
- Recalculate normals in your 3D software before exporting — see the Fix Wrong Normals tutorial
- Check for overlapping or intersecting geometry
- Try different HDRI environments — some environment maps produce better results with certain cuts
- Use the diamond models provided by iJewel, which are verified to work correctly
How can I reduce diamond sparkle frequency in videos?
Diamond sparkle is mainly controlled by the Gem HDR environment maps. To reduce sparkle frequency:
- Try using different HDRI maps in the Gem Env setting
- Adjust the Bloom parameters in Post Processing
- Modify the envRotation values in the diamond material
Can I apply a different HDRI to diamonds and metal separately?
Yes. In Playground, you can set separate environment map slots for Metal and Gem/Diamond materials. Go to Scene → Background / Environment and look for the Metal Env and Gem Env options. This lets you use a studio HDRI for metal reflections and a different, more sparkly HDRI for diamond refraction.
How do I create material variations and save them?
- Click on an object in the viewport to select it
- In the Configurator tab, click Add Variation — this adds a material variation icon
- Modify the material properties (color, roughness, metalness, etc.) for each variation
- Repeat for multiple objects and variations
- To save all variations, click the three dots (⋯) above the Material Configurator UI and click Download Preset — this saves to a JSON file that can be reused across models with matching object/material names

My model's file size is too large because of textures. How do I check which textures are heavy?
Go to Picking → Physical Material and check the different texture maps (Albedo, Roughness, Metalness, Normal, etc.). You can download individual texture images to check their sizes. Large texture maps are usually the main contributor to file size — consider reducing their resolution before re-importing.
The model looks fine in Playground but terrible in Shopify. Why?
Shopify's default 3D viewer does not support iJewel's advanced lighting, diamond rendering, or post-processing effects. To get the same quality on your website, embed your model using the iJewel Viewer SDK or use iframe embedding.
